Bacterial pneumonia complications

Complications of bacterial pneumonia can be difficult for some, and moderate for the others. It depends on the overall health of the affected individual and the extent of damage caused by infection of the body.
Bacterial pneumonia can lead to serious complications if not treated in time. People who are healthy with strong immune systems are less susceptible to infection with this contract. However, some bacteria are those that have the potential to attack the immune system and healthy people. But even if so, can be seen easily. For older adults, may be even worse.

What is bacterial pneumonia?

Pneumonia, as many of us are already familiar, is characterized by inflammation of the lungs. Besides bacteria, the same also be brought to the fungi or parasites, viruses, or bacteria are the most common viruses. In this case it is not just one type of bacterium that causes this disease. Some bacteria are known to trigger infection during everyday life (the so-called community-acquired pneumonia), while some are hospital-acquired pneumonia.

In the first group, it is community-acquired pneumonia may be common types of bacteria that cause infection include:

 • Streptococcus pneumoniae
 • Mycoplasma pneumoniae
 • Haemophilus influenzae
 • Chlamydophila pneumoniae
 • Legionella pneumophila
 • Bordetella pertussis

Common bacteria that cause infections in the hospital environment include:

 • Escherichia coli
 • the type of Enterobacter
 • Acinetobacter species
 • Staphylococcus aureus
 • The types of Streptococcus
Know that infections contracted in hospitals where it is usually more severe than community-acquired infections. This is because one is already dealing with the disease and is in a state of reduced immunity.

Complications of untreated bacterial pneumonia

Complications I
A serious complication of infection can occur when the causal bacteria gets into the blood circulation of persons with disabilities. This can lead to an infection known as sepsis. This infection causes the immune system to react in such a way that can cause more damage to organs in the body. As this situation continues, it can cause a fatal drop in blood pressure of the body.

Complications II
The fluid can accumulate between the thin membranes that are known to provide covering the lungs and mucous membranes that line the inner surface of the chest wall. This can cause further infection by worsening of symptoms, and pushes himself to a more severe state phase.

Complications III
Part of the lung, which is attacked by infection, may develop a cavity filled with pus type. This occurs when the bacteria infects the lung tissue and begins to multiply. In an effort to fight this infection, the body reacts by forming a wall around the infected parts, which later gets filled with pus.

Complications of IV
Meningitis can also cause pneumonia. Brain and spinal cord are surrounded by a membrane known as the meninges. In some cases, the bacteria that cause pneumonia infect the meninges, and cause them to suffer from inflammation. This condition is known as meningitis.

The complications
Other serious consequences of infection may be difficulty in breathing. This condition robs the body of oxygen, which may further exacerbate the condition.

These complications may prove difficult for people who smoke or suffer from any heart disease, lung, or people aged over 65 years. The best solution to avoid them, is that before the conclusion of infection in the first place. This is because although antibiotics can treat most types of bacterial pneumonia, there are some tribes that were able to develop resistance to all these drugs. That is why it is always recommended to complete the entire antibiotic to prevent their recurrence, and reduce the chances of bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Keep safe!
